Oxblood red nails

Posted on 08:53 by gaurav kumar
How gorgeous is this Chinatown red nail polish for the holidays? My friend Kendra is wearing it here, and it looks romantic and elegant. The color is deep, rich and glossy. It would be so pretty to wear to a party. (We also liked this dramatic red, if you want something even darker.) Which polish are you wearing right now? xo

P.S. Oxblood shoes.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Posted on 10:18 by gaurav kumar
What are you up to this weekend? We are having friends over for cocktails on Saturday; Alex has been making tequila sunrises lately. Although I'm such a nerd and always go to bed at 9:30! Hope you have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web...

Have you ever tried butter socks? They're ridiculously awesome.

Really nice sounds.

Four reader makeovers

Posted on 12:30 by gaurav kumar
A couple weeks ago, I asked if anyone would like a glasses makeover from Lookmatic. We were amazed to get more than 500 responses! Everyone was so funny and cute that it was almost impossible to narrow down the list. But in the end, we invited four women—Jen, Bridget, Caitlin and Roselyn—to spend a girly morning in Brooklyn.

Favorite grey jeans

Posted on 09:00 by gaurav kumar
A few people on instagram have asked about my grey jeans, and I love them so much that I thought I'd share the info here, too: They're this AG pair. They have a bit of stretch, so they're super flattering. They were the first jeans I wore after having a baby, and they miraculously made me feel sexy while my other pairs still looked terrible. They're not cheap, but I think jeans are worth splurging on, since you wear them all the time, right? It's the whole cost-per-wear idea. Anyway, I'd highly recommend them!

Any recommendations of fall clothes you love?

P.S. Pretty shoes.

Fall trend: Grey nails

Posted on 09:38 by gaurav kumar
One funny part of fall in New York is that you start spotting all the new nail polish colors on women around town. My favorite color might be this dove grey. Isn't it understated and beautiful? Here, my friend Kendra is wearing NARS Galathee. What do you think? What other nail colors are you liking these days?

P.S. Navy nails, and short boots for fall.

Fall uniform

Posted on 08:37 by gaurav kumar
Inspired by my tomboy mom, I've been hoping to come up with a fall uniform. But the other day, I realized I already have one. Almost everyday, I've been wearing a Everlane seed-stitch sweater. The box cut is flattering and looks great with jeans. It feels like a sweatshirt, yet still feminine and pretty. I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for an easy shirt this fall.
What's your uniform these days?

P.S. Parisian wedges.

Style inspiration: Caroline Issa

Posted on 06:49 by gaurav kumar
The fashion industry is known for being cutthroat (e.g., Anna Wintour conducts the scariest interviews), but London-based fashion editor Caroline Issa has a megawatt smile in every photo I've seen of her. I love her warmth and friendliness! Goes to show that even in an intimidating situation, you can just smile and make it work. Nine more inspiring photos below...Read More >

HATCH fall collection

Posted on 07:46 by gaurav kumar
Confession: These first few months after having a baby have been a little wobbly. The newborn stage is magical and delicious, but I had forgotten what it's like to be so mind-numbingly tired. So, I've been trying to do a few things every day to feel like myself. I read the New Yorker on my phone. I chat with funny parents at the playground. I shower and blow dry my hair every morning. It's funny how those little things—especially, somehow, clean hair—can make a big difference to feeling centered and refreshed.

As for what to wear, HATCH just came out with their fall collection. I wore some HATCH maternity clothes when I was pregnant, and they made me feel beautiful. But a great thing about HATCH is that you can wear their pieces after pregnancy, too. The flowing styles are flattering to all body types, and I love how effortless they feel. (I'm eyeing this top for nursing, and how chic is this cape?!)

What do you do when you need a boost? Read a good book? Call an old friend? Sneak off for a pedicure? Drink a big glass of wine? I'd actually love some suggestions! :)
(This awesome little dude likes to party all night. Anton, go to sleep!)

(HATCH is one of Cup of Jo's beloved long-term sponsors. Thank you for supporting the sponsors that make Cup of Jo possible)

Madewell's fall collection

Posted on 10:45 by gaurav kumar
Madewell's fall collection launched on their website today, and they nailed it. They're really coming into their own with this downtown girl look. I love the new direction they're going in. Everything feels urban, sexy and tomboyish, and the styling is more grown-up and laid-back. (And that messy hair!) See the full collection here. What do you think?
P.S. Their French knot skimmers are at the top of my wishlist:) Would look so great with jeans this fall.

Snacks around town

Posted on 13:00 by gaurav kumar
Now that Anton is almost seven weeks old, I'm starting to get the hang of exploring the city with two little dudes. We've had some chaotic moments (yesterday Toby was stuck in a bucket swing because I was carrying Anton and didn't have free arms to get him out!), but overall things are getting smoother.
One thing that makes things easier is having a stash of yummy snacks. When Anton is hungry, I'll breastfeed in public and always immediately get hungry like the wolf. And my man Toby is always starving:)
This is his "may I please have a snack" face.
Our go-to snacks are from NatureBox. They're a snack subscription service, and they send you five bags of natural snacks every month. Our favorites include guacamole bites, blueberry almonds, banana chips, dried apples and whole-wheat raspberry figgy bars. Toby loves them all, and the snacks are so much healthier than other snacks we’ve eaten in the past. You can choose the exact snacks you want (they have more than 90 different kinds) or let them surprise you.
You can sign up for the regular NatureBox (5 bags for $19.95), the Family Snacker (10 bags for $29.95) or the Professional Snacker (20 bags for $49.95). As I've mentioned before, I initially wondered if the snacks seemed expensive, but they're actually comparable to buying from Whole Foods or gourmet groceries. It works out to between $2.50 and $4 per bag, which is amazing.

Bonus: Get 50% off your first box with the code CUPOFJO (so you'll enjoy five bags for $9.95), if you'd like to give NatureBox a taste; good for two weeks.
(This post is sponsored by NatureBox, whose mission and snacks I adore. Photos by Julia Robbs for Cup of Jo. My shirt and bag are from Madewell, my sandals are Everlane, and Anton's baby carrier is a BabyHawk Mei Tai)

Short boots for the fall

Posted on 11:30 by gaurav kumar
Don't you love the look of short boots in the fall? They are tomboyish and sexy with faded jeans, and I'd love to get a pair to wear every day. Here are four favorites...
Above: Billie Boots, Felix Booties (in black here) and Mars Booties (which I've spotted on so many beautiful women in New York! Such a crowd favorite).

Which would you choose?

Do you still like beards?

Posted on 10:00 by gaurav kumar
When Alex accidentally grew a beard five years ago (he had the flu), I told him he looked rugged and handsome. Surprised, he said I was the only woman he knew who actually liked beards. But since then, beards have blown up in a huge way. For the past few years, it has seemed as if every guy—famous or otherwise—has grown a beard. Do you agree?

But last week, the Guardian ran an article asking, "Have we reached peak beard?" Apparently, they have gone mainstream and now might be on the wane.

So, I'm curious: Do you still like beards? Are you sick of them? Do you just want to see a guy's actual face for once? I'm still a super fan. Over the past five years, Alex has sometimes considered shaving, but I insist he never does!

P.S. Before and after.

Beautiful bags

Posted on 06:35 by gaurav kumar
Have you seen Baggu's soft leather tote bags? They've been blowing up on the internet! It's surprisingly hard to find lovely simple bags, but these are the kind of bags you'd reach for every day and carry everywhere, from work to farmer's markets to picnics. (I love the gold color.)

P.S. These are also great.

Let's talk about fashion...

Posted on 07:00 by gaurav kumar
Food and fashion.
Krisatomic's post about what fashion week actually looks like made me laugh.
Toby and I went to the NARS store recently (it's dangerously located across the street from the playground) and I was psyched to get the beautiful red Vesuvio for the summer.
What to do when your kid is embarrassed by your fashion sense.
A summer trend: Knot your shirt!
This gold watch is at the top of my wishlist. Chic and timeless.
Summer hair idea: Teeny braids.
Part Nouveau is an amazing blog that reveals how current fashion photography is inspired by old paintings, art and movies.
Funny descriptions of what 13 people wore to interview with Anna Wintour. And have you seen The September Issue? The documentary takes a fascinating peek behind the scenes at Vogue. The takeaway: Anna Wintour is scary!

P.S. Tomboy style, and a tote bag for grammer lovers. Plus, 16 hair tutorials.
