Awesome shades

Posted on 13:15 by gaurav kumar
One final post about our place before you're totally sick of it! :) A few people asked about the window treatments, and they're really really awesome. The apartment had old blinds when we moved in, and we were nervous about the cords with the boys. So we got shades from Decorview, which Emily knew about–they basically come to your place, measure everything, help you pick out colors and textures, and then come back and install it all. It's so easy. And the coolest part is that they're motorized!!! You just press a button on the wall—or a remote!

Here's a video we took with the boys in the morning, where Toby is basically speaking a different language the entire time. Haha, three year olds:)

P.S. Toby talking about Indian food, and becoming a New Yorker.

Fog Linen

Posted on 11:53 by gaurav kumar
How pretty are these napkins and trays from Fog Linen? The understated Japanese home store has such lovely things. I'd love to get a few for relaxed family dinners and having people over.

P.S. Do you use cloth napkins for regular dinners? Is that a thing most people do? (We always end up using leftover Chipotle napkins!)

House makeover begins—Emily is here!

Posted on 11:15 by gaurav kumar
As I mentioned before, we recently moved to a new apartment, and designer Emily Henderson is helping us give it a makeover. We are so excited to have this amazing opportunity. Emily and her team arrived in New York this morning, and everything will be installed, arranged, hung and designed by Thursday. Whew!

As the first step, a few weeks ago, Emily asked us to show her photos of rooms we liked. Here's what we showed her...Read More >

Natural home scents

Posted on 07:15 by gaurav kumar
The temperatures are dropping this week, so it's time to get cozy! Here's an amazing way to make your whole house smell amazing...
First combine ingredients, like citrus basil (fresh and clean)...
Juniper and pepper (masculine)...
...or vanilla cinnamon (cozy and festive)...

All you have to do is cover the ingredients with water and simmer on the stove—and voila! Your entire home will smell incredible. Great for a cold day inside, right? Or a holiday party! xo

Decorating our new apartment

Posted on 09:18 by gaurav kumar
We've now been in our new apartment for almost a month, and we're loving the big windows, lack of mice, extra space and dishwasher. (Yahoo!) But with a baby and toddler taking up every spare moment, we've been insanely slow with decorating. We still have unopened boxes in every room and haven't hung a single picture on the walls.

For our old apartment, our dear friend and design genius Jenny Komenda gave our place a much-needed makeover. She had brilliant ideas on a budget, and really made our house a home. But with her new house and new role at Domino (congrats, Jenny!), she's now swamped with her own projects.

Still, for our new apartment, we were hoping to get a little help making it feel cozy and comfy for our family of four. We also need some new furniture—like a dining table, which we finally have room for!—so we wanted help figuring out what to choose and how to arrange everything. We didn't want to mess it up!

So I'm thrilled to say we'll be working with Emily Henderson (pictured above) and her senior designer Samantha Gluck. We're so excited! We feel really lucky to be collaborating with such incredibly talented women.

Here are a few of the pretty rooms Emily has done in the past, which you may have seen around the internet...Read More >

Do or Don't: Flag decor

Posted on 08:07 by gaurav kumar
Now that we've unpacked all the boxes in our our new apartment, we're going to start decorating! We've lived in crumbling New York apartments for so long that we still have our old stuff—IKEA lamps, a ripped sofa, old yellow pillows. So I'm excited to get a few nicer things, hang some pretty art and make our home feel grown-up.
For artwork, one thing that packs a punch is using vintage flags as artwork. You can either frame them or just pin them up. It's a way of looking at a flag as an object of art, like Jasper Johns, versus any sort of political statement. A giant flag over the sofa might look really cool, don't you think?

Baby alpaca nursery

Posted on 07:00 by gaurav kumar
Last spring, I was lucky enough to visit animal photographer Sharon Montrose at her studio to watch her photograph a baby alpaca. (Here's that post.) Since then, I've been waiting on pins and needles to see the results of the photo shoot, and this morning, Sharon finally released her two alpaca prints! How sweet is this one, above?!
To celebrate the new prints, Sharon and her team put together an Animal Print Shop Nursery Project: Desert Modern to show how lovely the photos look in a room...
Here's the first baby alpaca print...
And the nursery also features a gallery wall of Little Darlings, including the baby alpaca's little face.
How warm and beautiful is that nursery? I'd love to sleep there myself:)

Here's where everything is from, in case you're curious...
Crib: Ouef
Eames Rocker: Vintage find. Similar from Modernica
Walnut Credenza/Changer: OneFortyThree
Animal Art: The Animal Print Shop
Rug: Vintage find. Similar from Red Thread Souk
Beaded Pendant Light: CAMP
Elephant Chair: DWR
Mobile: Vintage find. Similar on Etsy
Kilim Pillow: Sukan
Lion Stuffed Animal: Jellycat
Ottoman: Vintage Franco Albini
Toy Basket: Baskets of Africa
Production: The Animal Print Shop
Designer: Morgan Satterfield
Room photographed by: Laure Joliet
What sweet prints, here and here. Thanks, Sharon!

P.S. What it's really like to be an animal photographer.

Home Inspiration: Big plants

Posted on 08:31 by gaurav kumar
How striking are these huge plants? They're like gorgeous green sculptures in each room. I've never met a plant I couldn't kill within a few days, but I'd love to try to grow one of these guys! The plant in the middle photo, above, is a fiddle leaf fig tree, and you can find similar ones at Home Depot. More photos below...

P.S. 10 favorite wallpapers.
